Qatar intercepted several Iranian ballistic missiles and halted liquefied natural gas (hereinafter: LNG) production after attacks on energy facilities during the ongoing war on Iran by Israel and the United States of America (hereinafter: USA). The incidents occurred in early March 2026 and included missile interceptions by Qatari air defences, drone strikes on gas infrastructure and government statements regarding maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz.
Missile Interceptions Over Qatar
The Ministry of Defence of Qatar stated that the nation’s air defence systems intercepted five Iranian ballistic missiles during an attack targeting the state. According to officials, all missiles were successfully intercepted and neutralised without casualties or reported damage. The missiles were launched as part of Iran’s strategy to disrupt the USA’s and Israel’s military supply chains by targeting their military bases in neighbouring states. Earlier missile barrages had also targeted locations across Qatar. It was also reported that several waves of missile and drone attacks have occurred since the beginning of the war.
Attacks On Qatar’s Energy Infrastructure
Drone Strikes Target Gas Facilities
Next to foreign military bases, Iranian drone attacks targeted energy facilities in Qatar, including locations in Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City. According to statements cited by Anadolu Ajansı, one drone struck a water tank at a power facility in Mesaieed while another targeted infrastructure belonging to QatarEnergy at Ras Laffan. QatarEnergy subsequently announced that it had halted production of liquefied natural gas and associated products following the attacks on the facilities.
The Ras Laffan complex is one of the largest liquefied natural gas export centres globally and forms a central part of Qatar’s energy infrastructure. Officials said that technical teams were conducting evaluations to determine the condition of the facilities and the timeline for resuming production. The shutdown affected exports from one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas producers. Global energy markets responded to the disruption with increased volatility in natural gas prices.
Qatar Calls For Open Maritime Routes
Foreign Minister Emphasises Importance Of Strait Of Hormuz
Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that maintaining open maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz is essential for global energy supply and commercial shipping. The minister said that keeping the waterway open is critical because it serves as a major route for energy shipments from Gulf producers to international markets.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass through the route each day. Qatari officials emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in maritime transport routes while regional tensions continue.
Statements On Attacks Against Infrastructure
Qatari officials also stated that Iranian strikes on infrastructure represent a dangerous precedent because they involve facilities that play a role in international energy supply. Authorities stated that security measures have been increased to protect infrastructure and ensure the safety of energy facilities and maritime transport routes without specifying the details.
Strategic Outlook
Iran’s attacks on neighbouring nations, such as Qatar, are part of a strategy to win support for its defensive war against the USA and Israel. By attacking military bases of the counterparts in other nations, as well as critical energy infrastructure, Iran wants those nations to develop an interest in Iran’s victory. As many of the neighbouring states are dependent on oil and gas exports, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the attacks on energy facilities endanger those nations’ economies.
Moreover, as Iran is defending itself against the aggressors, the populations of the respective neighbouring states, so Iran plans, develop a sympathy for Iran, while developing more resistance against the foreign allies. This way, the population of Qatar and other nations that are targeted by Iran will pressure their respective governments into supporting Iran or at least denying help to the USA and Israel.
Finally, there is also a tactical component to the attacks. By attacking military bases abroad, the military capabilities of the USA and Israel are diminished, as well as their supply chains are disrupted. This could be an important factor for Iran defending itself in the course of this war.
