Yemen fighting has intensified sharply across multiple fronts, with Houthi forces releasing footage they claim shows the wreckage of a Saudi F-15 fighter jet shot down over Marib province; a claim that, if confirmed, would represent the first time the group has downed a combat aircraft of that class. The escalation spans ground clashes near the Saudi border, large-scale missile and drone strikes on Saudi cities and military installations, and Houthi territorial advances around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's most consequential maritime chokepoints (France 24).
The F-15 Claim And Air War Over Yemen
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree posted footage on social media on 16 September 2026 purporting to show the downed Saudi aircraft in Marib, a province that has been a sustained flashpoint in the conflict. The group stated that the jet was brought down during active aerial operations over Yemeni territory (Al Jazeera). Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed the loss of an aircraft at the time of reporting, and independent verification of the footage remained unavailable.
Saudi Arabia responded to the broader escalation with renewed airstrikes across Yemen. Riyadh also accused Houthi forces of conducting a drone attack targeting Mecca, describing the operation as a "cowardly" act, and launched retaliatory strikes on Yemeni territory on 17 September 2026. Houthi officials reported fresh Saudi aerial bombardments on that date, though neither side provided independently verified casualty figures for those specific strikes (France 24).
Missile And Drone Strikes On Saudi Territory
The aerial exchange forms part of a sustained Houthi offensive against Saudi territory. On 14 September 2026, Houthi forces claimed a strike on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia, and on the following Sunday claimed responsibility for an attack on the Sharurah base, with Saree stating the operation targeted "weapons depots and command and control centres that are managing the aggression against our nation and people" (Anadolu Agency). The group said the operation was carried out using ballistic missiles and drones.
A subsequent large-scale strike targeted King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, with the Houthi statement specifying that dozens of ballistic missiles and drones were deployed in the operation. The group stated the attack was a direct response to what it described as more than 300 Saudi airstrikes across Yemen during the preceding five days. Houthi spokesmen warned that continued Saudi operations would prompt larger strikes deeper inside Saudi territory (Anadolu Agency).
Attacks on Saudi cities extended beyond military installations. Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led Arab coalition (hereinafter: the coalition), confirmed that Houthi forces struck Khamis Mushait, Abha and Jizan with ballistic missiles and drones on consecutive days. Saudi authorities reported that the strikes injured 73 people and caused fires at oil facilities, prompting Riyadh to vow a formal response (BBC). Oman condemned the attacks on civilian and economic infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, reflecting regional concern over the widening scope of hostilities.
Ground Fighting And Houthi Territorial Advances
On the ground, Yemeni government forces clashed with Houthi fighters near the Saudi border in the Al-Jawf area, with footage from Agence France-Presse showing soldiers in armoured vehicles and trucks advancing across desert terrain under sustained machine-gun fire. Waleed Al-Mahajeri, operations commander of the government's First Division Emergency Forces, stated that his units were advancing on the Al-Labanat front and expected to reach Houthi positions (Dawn). Houthi forces simultaneously released their own footage of the Al-Jawf fighting.
Beyond the northern border area, Houthi forces have been consolidating control around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the narrow waterway linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden through which a significant share of global oil shipments transit. The group seized at least two additional strategic islands in the southern Red Sea, tightening its grip on the passage. Renewed fighting in western Yemen over the preceding weeks left hundreds dead and displaced tens of thousands of civilians, according to reporting cited by multiple outlets (France 24).
International Response And Humanitarian Pressure
The United Nations (hereinafter: UN) condemned recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, specifically citing strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure, while simultaneously urging both parties to return to negotiations. The UN statement coincided with warnings from analysts that Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait could disrupt Saudi oil export routes at a moment of heightened regional tension (Arab News). The humanitarian situation inside Yemen has deteriorated further, with the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians compounding an already severe crisis.
Saudi Arabia's vow to respond formally to the city and energy infrastructure strikes signals that the exchange of fire between Riyadh and Houthi forces is unlikely to de-escalate in the near term without external mediation. The UN's call for negotiations has so far not produced a ceasefire framework, and the Houthis' warning of deeper strikes inside Saudi territory — contingent on continued Saudi aerial operations — sets out a stated escalatory logic that both sides appear to be following in parallel.
What Comes Next
The unverified F-15 claim carries particular significance: if Saudi Arabia or independent sources confirm the loss, it would mark a qualitative shift in Houthi air-defence capability and alter the operational calculus for coalition air campaigns over Yemen. Saudi Arabia has not acknowledged the loss, and the footage released by the Houthis had not been independently authenticated at the time of publication. The coalition's next declared response to the city strikes, the trajectory of ground fighting in Al-Jawf and the degree to which Houthi forces consolidate their position at Bab al-Mandab will be the principal indicators of whether the current escalation stabilises or widens further.
In the international context, the escalation will also test the freshly signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, of which Saudi Arabia is a core signatory. If Pakistan and Türkiye do not side with Saudi Arabia with direct help, this would already undermine the agreement that builds on comprehensive defence commitments. It could be that help in the form of weapons, technology and intelligence is provided, but the escalation of the war between Yemen and Saudi Arabia will require a response to uphold the legitimacy of the agreement.
